Step-by-Step Guide to Creating an Email QR Code
An Email QR code stores a mailto: link. When someone scans it, a compatible email app opens a new draft with the details you supplied. The scanner can review, edit and send that draft; scanning the code does not send a message automatically.
How to create an Email QR code
- Enter the recipient's email address.
- Add an optional subject and message.
- Check the live preview, which updates automatically as you type.
- Customise the colours, shape or logo if needed.
- Scan the preview with a phone, then choose a file format and select Download.
Test the downloaded code with the email apps your audience is likely to use. Email apps can display encoded text differently, so keep the subject concise and use plain text in the message.
What the Email QR code contains
- Recipient: the email address for the new draft.
- Subject: an optional pre-filled subject line.
- Message: optional plain text for the body of the draft.
This generator creates a static Email QR code. The recipient, subject and message are stored in the code itself. They cannot be changed after the image has been downloaded or printed, and the code does not include built-in scan analytics. Create and publish a new code when those details change.
Common uses for Email QR codes
- Open a customer support request with a useful subject line.
- Collect feedback from packaging, receipts or signs.
- Start an event enquiry or registration email.
- Make it easier to contact a sales or recruitment address.
Email QR code questions
Does scanning the code send an email?
No. It opens a draft in a compatible email app. The person scanning the code chooses whether to edit or send it.
Can I change the email details after printing?
No. This is a static QR code, so the encoded details cannot be edited. Create and print a new code for a different recipient, subject or message.
Can I track scans?
The public Email QR code does not provide scan analytics.
Why does nothing happen when I scan it?
The scanning device needs a compatible email app with an account configured. If no email app is available, the device may not be able to open the draft.
